What is the Gospel?

10 06 2009

A Definition

The word gospel means “good news.”  When the Bible speaks of the gospel of Christ, it has in mind the “good news of Christ on behalf of lost humanity.”

The Human Tragedy

Humanity was lost and separated from the Creator because of sin.  The Creator, being holy in character, demanded a payment for the treason of sin committed against him.  This payment meant eternal separation from the Creator in hell (Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:1-3).

The Divine Solution

But the “good news” is that the heavenly Father reached us to rescue us in grace, his divine favor (Titus 2:11; Eph. 2:8)—Jesus took our place: he lived the perfect life.  He became the perfect sacrifice for our sins.  He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again that we might experience new life with the heavenly Father (John 3:16; Rom. 3:21-26; 6:23).

The “good news” means that we’ve now been reconciled to our heavenly Father because the sin debt has been paid in full (1 Pet. 3:18).

A Decision

The Father has been it possible for sinful humanity to be reconciled to him through the sacrifice for sin of his Son.  Now we must make a decision to receive his Son.

We must recognize our separation from our heavenly Father because of our sinfulness, repent of our sins, that is, change our minds about sining against a holy God, and put our trust in his Son to save us, because he lived the perfect life, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again to reconcile us to our holy God.

When we do this, we’re giving new life through the Holy Spirit, adopted into the family of God, declared to be in right standing with the Father, and have our sins paid in full, past, present, and future.

There’s no better news.

If you have not repented of your sins and placed your faith in Jesus to save you, Why not do so today?
